Stijn Streuvels' (1871-1969) De teleurgang van den Waterhoek (The decline of the Waterhoek) originally appeared in a pre-publication edition in the literary journal De Gids and was first published in 1927. In the second edition, in 1939, it seems that more than 25% of the text was deleted, which included passages that deal with the relationship between the main characters, Mira and Maurice. All the subsequent editions were to use this abridged version.

The answer to what passages were edited out or altered in the various editions--and why--can be found by studying the original manuscripts and the author's correspondence. However, this sort of genetic research has remained the privilege of the editor. Until now, that is. All that has changed with the publication of this electronic-critical edition.

The CD-ROM presents the full text version as it first appeared in its pre-publication form in De Gids; the first edition (with word clarifications); the revised second edition, the digital facsimile of the complete manuscript, the pre-publication and first editions as corrected by Streuvels himself; together with the edition of 71 letters from Streuvels' correspondence and several scholarly articles on the subject.

The MultiDoc Pro on-the-fly SGML Browser software provides advanced search options and makes it possible to annotate the included material, bookmark certain sections, and even create your own hyperlinks. An extensive English manual is included on the CD.

This electronic edition offers many new possibilities for literary scholarship.

Professor Marcel De Smedt teaches Methodology (German Philology) and Textual Criticism at the Catholic University in Leuven.
